WORLD WIDE MUSIC & HIP HOP STUDY

(c) 2001 Bert Barrett a.k.a. tOObizzy mc

Study of teenagers’ preferences for music around the world (with an eye towards hip-hop)!!!

Subj: MUSIC IN ISRAEL

Date: 96-01-08 02:43:13 EST

From: Ahrea

To: TOOBIZZY1

Hi. I (an American) lived in Tel Aviv for six months, so I think I can say that I have a fairly good idea of the music "scene" there, plus
my boyfriend at the time is a really popular DJ so you could say that I immersed myself in the music. My opinion of their preferences
is that there are a lot of popular Israeli bands/singers like David Broza, Shlomo Artzi, Yudit Ravitz, and many more, so a lot of
teenagers listen to those artists. Along with listening to them you will find the Cranberries very popular too. I heard a lot of techno
music while I was there too. They have EuroMtv, so they are pretty much up to date. It still depends on the individual. I have some
Israeli friends who like mostly Israeli artists, while others love American and British bands. I hope that helped you a bit. If you have
any other questions let me know and I will try to answer them.

Bert,

What I found as far as rap was that they played the song "Jump" a lot. I can't remember who sings that. A lot of dance music too.
So they might have the trendy songs with a dance beat. Many people like what people in the US consider "cliub music." When I was
there I saw the Beastie Boys and the Prodigy. The Prodigy is a popular techno band in the UK. Another band that is popular is the
Pixies. Honestly, I am not too sure about the rap scene over there. I hope this helps a bit more. Anything else, just email me and I
will try!!! :-)

Hi again...as to the fact of WEB influence I have no clue. I had email when I was there, but that was because I was at the university.
Most of my friends there don't have email...Still as music goes, I talked to my ex in Israel (the DJ) and we were talking about music
and asking me what was out here etc...he is playing the Foo Fighters and basically a lot of the same MTV bands. He has a radio
show along with his club stuff. But then again that might just be the "alternative" side of Israeli culture. I remembered the name of
the band --Cypress Hill. I have no clue why I could not think of that name. I really can't think of any other rap bands...

Mimi

Bert,

As for influence...I think a lot comes from Europe. It's weird how music travels the way that it does. No, my "x" does not have
email, let alone a computer, but next time I talk to him I will be sure to ask him if his radio station does. I also think that no matter
where people live, people are people and many are just attracted to certain genres of music. Also, as you said Cypress Hill might just
have been played over there and other bands have not been heard. I go to school with a guy from Jordan, you might want to ask
him. It's not Israel, but he's a neighboring country...Let me know.

young portuguese kids listen to alot of eurohouse, which is house music with alot of techno in it.

Also alternative bands are big such as OFFSPRING AND GREEN DAY.

American music, euro-pop from London...they are BIG hits in the club scenes and on the radio...However, so is Flamenco pop. You
should listen or try to get an import tape of ROSARIO. She's the most famous (her mom was a famous flamenco singer in Madrid).
Rosario Flores is her full name and her latest album is SIENTO.

Good luck.

p.s.

Flamenco "pop"....is like a Flamenco percussion beat...Flamenco voice (you know how they yell at the top of their
lungs????)..however it has the techno-drum in the background and heavy guitar.

Why I know what I know:

1. My Grandmother is from Madrid (my family is from Basque and Castilla y

Leon Country)

2. I go to Europe often

3. I have spent time both in Spain and Greece (mainly as I am Greek and Spaniard)

4. I am studying at the Universidad de Salamanca this summer and Universidad

de Compultense de Madrid in the fall while working an internship job (as well as spending September in Greece (as usual)

Toobizzy,

I lived in the Philippines a few years ago right after college. The music scene outside of the hip areas of Manila is pretty lame. Believe
it or not, most people really love Barry Manilow, Bee Gees, Bread and really cheesy music from the 70s. Englebert Humperdink and
Chicago are both huge. In the two years I lived there I only found one bar/dance club that was playing modern music such as
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, rap, etc. This was in an expensive trendy part of Manila near Makati. My guess from talking to the other people is
that most either had livedin the US or currently lived in the US and were visiting family.

There is a strong appeal toward native music using native instruments, etc. and sung in Tagalog.

The Philippines is a very emotional, sensitive culture and their tastes in music reflect that. Hope this helps.

Most people have some form of radio - very few have tape players and almost nobody has CD players. CDs are $20 in a country
where the average monthly wage is $50. Only the very rich have CD players. However, lots of people seem to scrape the money for
a karaoke machine. You can hear all the favorites, "My Way", "To All the Girls I've Loved Before", and "Islands in the Stream" at all
hours of the day and night.

I don't think rap or heavy metal or alternative is disliked because of any cultural or governmental forces. I just think people don't like
it there. They really like sensitive, emotional music. When that Whitney Houston song from the Bodyguard was popular, I probably
heard it 20 times a day over the radio. People would play it twice in a row. It was ridiculous.

As far as computers and the Internet, goodluck! I didn't know anybody that had a computer although I'm sure there are some in
Manila and around the universities.

alt is popular. but our clubs have better music than the U.S. Zouk, Canto, Club Barracuda, Sparks, etc..., play lots of techno from
europe. much better than Am dance anytime. rap is for wussies. Germany is the mecca of dance techno. the best djs all come from
europe. Zouk is popular for underground music.

Hello DChewStud,

Thanks for your response! Very interesting and entertaining. Are you in Singapore or in US and used to be there before? Help me to
understand what is essentially Techno? Does this refer to music created with a computer like sound, like Kraftwerk maybe? Or the
Art of Noise?

What kind of a place is Singapore? It's over there by Korea isn't it? (Pardon my ignorance :-) Are many Americans there? Is the
culture heavily influenced by US?

Does Zouk have a home page where I can check them out or email their DJ's?

Loved your comment on rap! What is a wussie? What is the reason for your dislike of rap? How could rap be changed and improved
so it might appeal more to you and people in Singapore?

Very interesting discussion!!!

Thanks again, email soon.

Hi -

I am writing for a friend from Denmark who is here visiting me. So here's her answer:

Young people listen to a lot of Danish music and also American. Probably most listen to grunge-type Seattle music now. Some do
listen to rap, but it's hard to relate, perhaps, to black American rap. The type of problems described are not so common to Danes.
(low crime rate, poverty, etc., you know?) A form of rap is popular, however, more mixed with jazz sounds or otherwise
soft rap. Do you know Lucas ("Lucas with the lid off...") He's half-Danish and grew up there.

Hope that helps. What's up with this study? Are you writing something or just for your own interest?

See ya.

I have just returned to the states after studying abroad in Japan for the year. I can give you a quick rundown, although I cannot say
that I am perfectly accurate ofcourse.

The younger, innocent jr. high and high school kids seem to be faithful to the pop bands of Japan. Even if

they are familiar, and maybe enjoy Madonna, for example, there is no escaping the prevailing top-ranked songs! They are played at
McDonalds, the shopping malls, shops, and all over TV. These songs are also, ofcourse the songs that will be heard over and over in
the Karaoke bars and rooms. My friends, who ranged in age between 20 and 27, were on to American and Euro-techno, house,
R&B, hip-hop etc.

Even with the love for this type of music, I was never turned down when I proposed we go to karaoke and sing good ol' Japanese
tunes. If you have any more specific questions, I'll check this message box soon. Good Luck

Sachiko

I don't know what to tell you...but it's not like we live on another

stinkin' planet! I'm 16 and am high school...and to tell you the truth..the

natives are the minorities here. A lot of the stereotypes are false...I

mean, igloos? Gimme a break....but I guess you don't know what you don't

learn...so i'll tell you....I don't know what you meant about listening to

American music...but aren't we a part of the united states? I listen to

Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots (wish they would come out with

something new), Nirvana, Liz Phair, Ice Cube, TLC....and a bunch of other

groups and stuff that I don't feel like naming....my arms hurt :( I think

it could be that carpal tunnel thing....and if my mom catches me

typing...she'll murder me :) Hope I helped clear some things up :) Janelle

young people listen to obnoxious pop music--Korean or American. They love anything American. They illegally dub tapes and sell
them for cheap on the street. Yes, they sometimes listen to rap.

I spent eight months in Seoul teaching English

Sorry, I don't know about the computer situation. I'd guess that some do. Maybe you could get in touch with some people in the
American military over there. Or some Koreans in America or Korean Americans who communicate via internet to Korea.

What kind of study are you doing? Or is this for business?

Bert--

My best guess for finding pop music in Korea would be to look in a music store with a big international selection (for example,
Borders Books and Music). Or get more info in the international/world section under "Korea." Sorry I can't be of more help!

Hello,

i'm a 13year old(i hope that's not too young) native austrian who has

lived in san francisco,ca for 1 year now. I just visited Austria this

summer and will answer you questions.

Sure there is a slight following of American Music. Native Austrian

Music is often mixed with very modern techno or rock and even rap. Of

course then there is the original native music with harmonica,.... But

the mixed native and modern music is definitely more popular and in.

Rap music is pretty very unpopular, unless again it is mixed with

techno-industrial music. Pop,Rock and Alternative(mostly teen) are

by far the most popular. Some of the most popular artists are not

even known here in America. They are Bjork(definitely my favorite!!),

Die Aerzte,Caught in the Act,Captain Hollywood,The Kelly Family,DJ Bobo,

Die Fantastischen Vier,Die Schluempfe,Fun Factory,Take That,La Bouche,

Marusha,Schwester S.,and Whigfield.

Teens would find raw rap a little unusual, but they would not find

it taboo. If your talking older people however, that may be different.

Anyway,if you have any other questions, email me!

Hi there... saw your inquiry in the Sweden area on AOL regarding your social study on music appeal in the world... was wondering if
you had any responses yet? I would be more than happy to help you! :o) I'm not sure what you've already been told or if you even
need the information anymore... please email me and I will do my best to help you. I am a Swedish American female, age 24 and I
am in touch with my Swedish friends (ages 16- 30) everyday via IRC (Internet Relay)and I am a member of the Swedish
Club in Seattle... Are you still working as an Interactive CD-ROM and Multimedia Producer? If so, I would be interested to hear what
you are working on! I used to be involved in a couple projects working for SafeWare, out of Seattle, WA. One of the main projects
we were working on was an interactive CD-ROM that taught Continuing Medical Education to emergency room physicians... would be
fun to talk to someone else that is involved in the industry... Hope I can be of some help...

Vi ses! (See you later)

~ShelleyRae

Hi Swede Beauty,

I like that better than Terror! Ooooh, scary! Yes, I am still collecting my info and still producing multimedia content. I am conducting
this study because one of my dreams is to communicate through music to people around the world. I would like to use my MM skills
to create enhanced CDs too.

I would like to know what kind of music your friends listen to? Is there native Swede music? Do they like it or do they prefer
American music? For those that like music from America, do they like RocknRoll, country, or Rap/Hip hop? I am particularly
interested in world wide opinion on rap. Do they like it in Sweden? Who are the most popular rap groups? When listening to rap, do
they listen to lyrics or do they just like the beat?

Thanks for helping me!

Mexican teenagers listen to almost everything that is popular in the US. Rap, however, may not be as popular as alternative. To give
you an example, every teen in Mexico knows who Kurt Cobain is. We can talk lots and lots of stuff about the Mexican music scene,
also. I should know...

I'M MEXICAN!!!!

So... If you need more info or just want to talk about music

cananas @aol.com

Cananas,

Thanks for response, very interesting! What is "alternative"? Always hear it, don't understand the term? Would you be able to send
me a tape? It would help my study alot. Do teens listen to the words in songs? or do they listen to music mostly in party settings?

Of the rap that is listened to, who is the favorite one? Do you know why?

Well, it's good That I can help you...

Here you have some answers:

a) Alternative? What is it?Well, is it, like, music from Nirvana?

b) Yes, I should be interested in sending you a tape... But I need a PO BOX or adress.

c) Yes, they listen to lyrics in songs, both in party settings and when by themselves. Why? Well, I can send you some translated
lyrics with the tape.

d) About the "rap" music, there's not much info I can give you, because I'm not very much into it, although I try to learn from what I
pick from MTV.

Overall, I'm interested in sending you Mexican rock music (or whatever tag we may want to put it) because I think there's really
some very good stuff and I'm proud of it as a mexican. More helpful info: Have you tried MTV LATINO on line? Maybe you can find
more answers in terms of demographics and numbers.

Happy to help and hoping to hear soon from you...

I am a German teacher and have taken students to Germany for the past 3 summers. We have also hosted German students here
in the US. Musical tastes vary just as they do among American teens/adults. I am still young so I recognize most of what they listen
to...

American music is popular - Metallica is very popular for some, as here. REM and most of the other well-known bands from US
are often heard. Many bands from England are also very popular... many more than here (American taste is very narrow...)
There are English groups such as Marillion which are quite popular but not here. (I recommend them HIGHLY if you like progressive
music! Misplaced Childhood, Clutching At Straws, Brave) ...

As in the US country music is seeing more popularity. I would say that in comparison to the Americans (teens or adults) that a
German taste in music has much more variety, openmindedness and tolerance... Rap was popular a few years ago and
there have been some German rap acts - (Fantastic Four)... I hope this helped - if you have more questions.... you can write
to me. Viel Glueck!

rap! Some of the songs are even

produced in America, isn't that amazing! But from age 23 to 35 are listening to some classical Taiwanese musics!

There are still some of them from age 14 to 35 like to listen to Western Music (Musics from America, Eurpoe). I am one of them! I
persoally don't really like contemporary Taiwanese Musics! Anyway, good luck on your project or research!

Feel free to send me a list of questions. Or if you want to meet "live" on AOL, it's as you want.

Chris,

Yes! Thanks for responding! I am interested to know what teens listen to in ages 13-35. Is there a Swiss native music and do teens
like that stuff? Do they like American music as much or more? What types of American music? Specifically, what is their interest in
RAP music? When they listen to rap, do they actually listen to the words and their meaning? or is it just a facination with the beats?
Your thoughts?

Young Swiss people listen to a lot of anglo-saxon/black music... bands from Great-Britain are always very popular...

10 Anamorphose/Mylene Farmer (French artist)

11 History, Past and Present/Michael Jackson

8.- Dieu m'a donne la foi/Ophelie Winter (french)
9.- Earth Song/Michael Jackson

Rap and Techno are very big right now... there are a lot of swiss rap groups that are doing well... "Sens Unik" is one...

We have only one major pop superstar (known in Europe only) : Stephan Eicher, who sings in english, german, italian, french...

His albums are all platinum...

If you look in the streets of the main Swiss cities, young people are all dressed like young americans (baggy jeans, sneakers, t-shirt
(selected brands...) , caps, etc...

Remember that because Switzerland is at the heart of Europe (and also because it is a very wealthy country) every major U.S. or
European act perform in Switzerland in major arenas (up to 50'000 people)... The Red Hot Chili Peppers were just there.... Green
Day.... Rolling Stones.... Oasis.... Tori Amos.... Joan Osborne.... Springsteen... Smashing Pumpkins.... Alice in Chains...

If you need more info, please feel free to email-me...I hope I've been helpful...

Here is what I can say about your last two questions:

>When they listen to rap, do they actually listen to the words and their meaning? or is it just a facination with the beats?

The majority of young Swiss know english pretty well but in most cases, they don't really understand the words and their meaning.
They like the beats and the attitude of the performer.

The more angry-driven they look, the better. I think that for them, Rap is a whole thing : the clothes, the shoes, the attitude, the
behavior, the music. But I don't think they really listen to the words.

But like always, there are -a few- exceptions.

Certain artists are liked FOR their words and certain kids only like Rap because of the words!

>Also, would you happen to know how I might contact some Swiss DJs who might be interested in a unique style of Underground
Hip Hop?

There are a few very famous Swiss DJ's who performs in England, New York and in Switzerland! But I don't know their addresses.
What you should do is send your stuff to :

COULEUR 3

attn. Blaise Duc

Ave. du Temple 40

1010 Lausanne

Switzerland

COULEUR 3 is a hip-hop/rap/techno/metal FM station in Switzerland (very, very hip!). The majority of guys that work there are
pros' and DJ's.

Write a note to Blaise Duc and tell him I told you to send your stuff to him ("Chris from LA" is enough...) Tell him you want some
DJ's and "programateurs" to listen to it. And if he can forward a copy to MANDRAX and other DJ's...

That's all I can do for know.

Keep me posted.

Lena,

Thanks for the reply. Very interesting feedback.

My research interests drive the possibilities of achieving my dream one day, which is to spread a message of peace around the world
through music.

There is much strife in the world and much of it arises from ignorance. People simply need to know more about each other and the
propensity for unrest and disharmony will decrease.

I am more a poet than a musician, so rap is a natural medium for me. Since I have a positive message, my stuff may not sell in NY
only. Hence, I am keeping my eyes open to what's going on worldwide. Do the teens in the Ukraine listen to or understand the
words in rap music? Why do you think they like Coolio?

I was just in Kyiv where they had Day of Kyiv Festival. The rock concert, called Chervona Ruta had lots of rap music. There must
have been 100,000 kids in Independence Square. It was on Kyiv telvision. You could find out more from the Ukrainian Weekly in
Jersey City.

Hi! I just read your message about what Greek teenagers like in terms of music, and I have some answers for you! I'm a Greek
teen living in the US, and I've been to Greece the last two years. In Athens, where I live in Greece, my friends and cousins and I listen
to mainly R&B, alternative, and some rap. Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Bon Jovi are very popular there (at least they were last
year!). Greek kids also listen to Greek pop music and traditional Greek music. One of the more popular musicians there is Sakis
Rouvas. Well, I hope I've been able to provide some useful information! E-mail me if you have anymore questions; I'd be happy to
help! :D

Sincerely,

SmelyCat4u

Hello

I am not Croatian but one of my best friends was! He was an exchange student and he LOVED Techno! All Kinds!! He taught me
what House, Acid, and Jungle music was. These are different types of techno. He particularly like a group called Bonzai. He wasn't
really into rap or alternative but he told me that Public Enemy (the rap group) came to his city and they loved it! In his country, raves
are HUGE. He had a Marusha CD and the soundtrack to Hackers which he played all the time. I hope this is of any help to you.

American music is popular in Taiwan ONLY if its not rock or alternative. Pop, R&B, rap, and anything that sounds like Michael Jackson
or the Backstreet boys are humongously popular. Which is pretty sad, because Taiwanese people are totally living in their own world,
and into the worst music ever heard of before. There's so much R&B there that you could probably fall asleep while walking through
Taipei, by the crooning of mandarin music!

more to come...
