The Biblical Patterns for Worship with God WHY DO WE WORSHIP GOD? "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve" (Mt. 4:10). "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker" (Ps. 95:6). "For all nations shall come and worship before thee"(Rev. 15:4)
HOW SHOULD WE WORSHIP GOD? "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit an in Truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit; and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and Truth"(John 4:23-24). "For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh"(Phil. 3:3). "O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness"(Ps. 96:9).
WHY DO WE STAND TO SING? "And the Levites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high"(II Chr. 20:19). "After this I beheld, and lo, a great multitude, which no man could
number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before
the throne and the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth
upon the throne, and unto the Lamb"(Rev. 7:9-10).
WHY DO WE CLAP OUR HANDS? "O Clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with a voice of triumph"(Ps.
47:1).
WHY DO WE LIFT OUR HANDS? "Thus will I bless Thee while I live: "I will lift up my hands in Thy name"(Ps.63:4.) "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord"(Ps. 134:2). "I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without
wrath and doubting"(I Tim. 2:8).
WHY DO WE HAVE AUDIBLE PRAISE UNTO GOD? "Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name"(Ps. 103:1). "By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name;(Heb. 13:15). "And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven,
saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honor, and power, unto the
Lord our God
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and
as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying,
Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth"(Rev. 19:1,6).
WHY DO WE DANCE BEFORE THE LORD? "Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in Him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name in the dance: let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel and harp"(Ps. 30:11). "Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou has put
off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness"(Ps. 30:11).
WHY DO WE SING IN TONGUES AND IN ENGLISH? "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: "I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also"(I Cor. 14:14-15). "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the
Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord"(Eph. 5:18, 19).
WHY DO WE PRAY WITH LAYING ON OF HANDS AND ANOINTING WITH OIL? "They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover"(Mk. 16:18). "Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church;
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord"(Jas.
5:14).
WHY DO WE HAVE SPEAKING IN TONGUES AND THE INTERPRETATION IN THE CHURCH? "Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with
tongues"
" But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit
withal
" I would that ye all spake will tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying"(I Cor. 15:5). "If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the
most by three, and that by course, and let one interpret"(I Cor. 14:27).
WHY DO WE PROPHESY? "But he the prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation,
and comfort"(I Cor. 14:3). "Follow after the charity, and desire spiritual
gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy"(I Cor. 14:1).
WHY ARE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS A PART OF THE WORSHIP SERVICE? "Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: praise Him with the psaltry and harp. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance. Praise Him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise Him upon the loud cymbals. Praise Him upon the high sounding cymbals"(Ps 150:3-5). "And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as
the voice of great thunder; and I heard the voice of harpers harping with
their harps" (Rev. 14:2).
WHY DOES THE WHOLE CHURCH PRAY AT ONCE FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS? "And when they heard that, "they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, Thou art God, which hast made heaven and earth "(Acts 4:24).
"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it"(Mal. 3:10). "Honor the Lord with Thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wind"(Prov. 3:9.10). "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Fir ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone"(Mat. 23:23). "Give, and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, shall men give into you bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again"(Luke 6:38). "But this I Say, He which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not
grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye,
always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work"(II
Cor. 9:6-8).
WHY DO WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE? "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be prefect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works"(II Tim. 3:16, 17). "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost"(II Pet. 1:20,21). "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God"(Mat. 4:4).
