State of the Industry Address The Fight to Balance Mainstream Hip Hop Bert Barrett a/k/a "tOObiz" "...it is far more fruitful for us to focus our energy on the establishment of a network of like-minded Christian (and otherwise positive) organizations to unite in building our own distribution chain." The power that the Hip Hop genre of music has is undeniable. According to figures compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Hip Hop genre is the second most sold genre in the United States. All this has occurred within the last 20 years (Rap was born to the masses in 1979)! In the year 2000, Rap/Hip Hop accounted for nearly 13% of the 14.3 billion in record sales. At 1.8 billion, this places it second to Rock and Roll (3.5 billion), as the second most popular style of American music. When taking this worldwide, with huge markets in Japan, France, Germany, Canada and even Mexico, we find the same enthusiasm for Hip Hop. Rap/Hip Hop sales worldwide each year amount to approximately 5 billion! Now, when we examine the genre for what it is, we observe that there is a difference between "Rap" and "Hip Hop." Each of the terms refers to the style of music that features the rhythmic presentation of words (and parts of words) syncopated to a beat. However, the youth will tell you that when speaking of Hip Hop, you are much more strongly referring to the lifestyle that goes along with the music. This is where I have a major problem with the Hip Hop we hear everyday on the radio and see every day, on our most popular TV shows. The power of the media and music videos are used to suggest the lifestyle that goes along with the music. Most often, we find that the lifestyle that is suggested by the videos and the way that the artists carry themselves is one that is very materialistic, rude, sexual, disrespectful of people (especially women), drug-centric, and careless with regard to human life. For the sake of discussion, I will refer to this as "the negative lifestyle." Given the popularity of this music genre, it deserves our attention. Having examined it for years, I have determined that the promotion of the negative lifestyle and the images that are normally associated with the music is the area that needs the most fixing. We need to clean up the lyrical content of the songs as well because it is usually what the words are saying that the artist is acting out in the videos and in his or her life. Hip Hop carries a lot of attitude with it. This attitude is very convincing to a child as he or she is growing up. Hence, the Gospel Hip Hop movement seeks to harness this attitude motivator and lifestyle-molding force by pouring in the word of God. Our hope is that by sowing good seeds into the music, we will reap a harvest in the youth culture. With the Lord as our guide, some of us have taken on this challenge, have created a style of Hip Hop that is undeniably positive, holy and acceptable unto God, and have ministered these songs to the youth. We are happy to report that it is working. We have observed a process that can "transform their minds by the renewal of their music." We are seeing youth take on an attitude about being Christ-like, and it is being reflected in their rhymes and lyrical flow. We are seeing clubs being formed that have church-like vibes, and we are seeing clothing lines such as Gwade’s Flavor4theSavior, Pastor Paul Dunn’s Preachaboy jeans, and Righteouswear, Inc. that allow the youth to reflect what they believe in by the garments they wear. Those of us who serve the Lord through Hip Hop have entered the fight to create a fair balance in mainstream Hip Hop, such that our youth have access to an equal balance of Hip Hop that promotes the negative lifestyle and that which promotes the positive. When you get into how the business works, you begin to see how certain promotional vehicles are set up to benefit those whom are cashing in on the 5 billion per year, while promoting the negative life style. Attempts to introduce our positive and Gospel Hip Hop are met with strong opposition and we are not allowed into the mainstream. Somehow, we must find a way to deliver the message to the youth when the normal delivery channels do NOT deliver. Somehow, we must find a way for the music to be served to the masses. Oh! And by the way, don't even think about radio stations that play strictly Christian music. For some reason, we are considered a different format than what they play. Even Christian music remains racially polarized, which sadly seems to contradict the word of God whom we know, is no respect of persons. OK, so now we are dealing with the nuts and bolts of basic marketing. We have a product for which there is proven demand. There is a whole lot of money out there but the access routes to it have been road-blocked. How do we proceed to carry out this aspect of the great commission, now that we have proven Hip Hop to be an effective tool for promotion of God's message of salvation? Some of us have determined that we will fight with the world to break down their roadblocks. For those, I wish them the best and will be the first to rejoice if they are successful. However, the Lord has shown me that it is far more fruitful for us to focus our energy on the establishment of a network of like-minded Christian (and otherwise positive) organizations to unite in building our own distribution chain. Religious leaders and Pastors are very busy people and they are approached all the time. Most often, they look for ways to improve their ministries. There is often politics, perception and protocol that one must contend with. However, the favor of God is with the anointed. The anointing will be felt and will help in gaining the leverage necessary to build the network. For those that grow weary of this task, I ask that you remind yourselves of the glory of Harriet Tubman – who was able to establish a successful network of like-minded folk united behind a godly purpose. Obviously, she had much less in every sense than any of us.Gospel Rap Evangelists must be true-vine Christians. They must be strong men and women of God that know the Word and know what they are called to do. They must diligently seek those pastors whom are able to see the vision. Once a network of support is built, the movement will gather momentum as the fruits begin to show. The Fishnett organization ( www.fishnett.org) will foster the growth of this movement and network construction. The Lord will send us key people along the way who will help us to reach this goal.
